It stands on top of a rock that must once have been a promontory, jutting out into the gulf. During the high tide, the huge waves of the Indian Ocean at the base of the rock, breaking into white foam. During low tide, one can walk to the temple. Several merus (pagodas) stand here amidst the scenery. Harmless sea-snakes are found in the holes in the rocks. They are called duwe and are considered sacred by the people of Bali, so they must not be disturbed. You can also include Alas Kedaton in your visit, a sacred forest of towering nutmeg, also known as the Monkey Forest. Tanah Lot lies 15 km Northwest of The Oberoi, Bali. UBUD: Ubud village is a major centre of the arts in Bali. Ubud grew from a small village into the famous resort that it is today. It became famous as an art colony and tourist destination following the arrival of Walter Spies, A German painter who established the Pita Maha artists organization. The Purl Lukisan museum was started by a Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, with the aim of preserving the high quality of Bali's art works. Ubud has many artists, but is especially known for its painters. Ubud is also known for its legong dancers. The Warna Warta Museum is also worth a visit. The village lies 28 kms from Denspar. Ubud is recommended for excellent art, including wood carvings, at very reasonable prices. Ubud lies 25 kms North East of The Oberoi, Bali.
