Attractions
Halls Creek, the oasis of the Kimberley, sits on the edge of the
Great Sandy Desert. It is also the closest town to the Purnululu National
Park where you will find the astounding Bungle Bungle massif.
Now a quiet town, Halls Creek was once the hub of a gold rush in the late
1800s. The smell of gold fever lingers on.
Prospectors still visit and live here and further inland at Old Halls
Creek, the original site of the township. It's a great spot to buy a
golden souvenir that is literally 'worth its weight in gold'.
The mud-brick remains of the old post office stand near the creek as a
timely reminder of the importance of water in a land as vast and remote as
this.
There are several refreshing places to swim like Caroline Pool, Palm
Springs and Marella Gorge.
Take time out to visit a natural phenomenon known as China Wall. Here a
quartz vein has pushed itself out of the landscape in what is believed to
be the largest single fault line of its kind in the world.
Another unique landmark is Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater, the second largest
in the world. It is incredibly impressive and well worth seeing.
But no visit to this area is complete without a trip into Purnululu
National Park. Here the beehive-like domes of the Bungle Bungle rise out of
the landscape producing an extraordinary sight. Coloured red, orange and
black they are truly spectacular; the sunsets that are reflected on their
walls will have you reaching for your camera again and again.
Here you will find palm-lined rock pools which are perfect for a cooling
swim. Walk in the shadows of the deep chasms where your voice will echo
against the walls.
With so many special spots in the Bungle Bungle it is a good idea to go
with a tour guide. He/she will provide information that you won't find
in any guide book and will point out features you may otherwise miss.
