The Astor Hotel Tianjin
General Description
Opened in 1863, The Astor Hotel is a step back into a bygone era. The
hotel has undergone several restoration and expansion programs in 1886,
1924 with a second building added in 1984. It is now an icon of Tianjin,
classified as a revered national heritage building by the Chinese
government. This treasured landmark has hosted Prime Ministers to
Presidents including Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, former U.S. President Herbert Hoover,
Prime Minister Zhou Enlai, four former Chinese presidents during the
warlord period, and many other dignitaries and celebrities. The Astor Hotel
is centrally located in Tianjin’s progressive financial district facing
the Hai He River and Green River and backing on to Victoria Park, and is a
mere 35 minutes drive from the airport. Tianjin is a major financial hub,
described as the “Shanghai of the North”. The city is a fascinating
paradox, gleaming office buildings rise above rows of rustic red-bricked
houses, luxury cars navigate through the sea of bicycles, quiet hutongs
neighbour cosmopolitan boutiques. At the heart of it all is The Astor
Hotel. Guests are immersed in the exquisite surroundings, from meandering
timber staircases, classic chandeliers, murals, plaques and memorabilia, a
reflection of another time. From a gourmand experience in one of the
elegant restaurants, a visit to the health club, or simply absorbing the
history of the many treasured antiquities, The Astor Hotel evokes gracious,
old world sophistication. Tastefully decorated in classic British colonial
style, the 152 rooms pay homage to The Astor’s fabled heritage; the two
themed suites have been carefully preserved with original furnishings and
amenities in an expression of matchless grace., For non-US hotels, rates
confirmed in USD may be converted to local currency by the hotel at your
time of stay, based on the exchange rate used by the hotel.
